Pop Quiz

George Carlin, the stand up comedian famous for his routines denouncing God, is dead at age 71.

What goes through your mind when you read that?

I’m ashamed to admit that the first thing that I thought was, “I guess he was surprised when he got to hell.”  What a horrible response.  A man dies without Jesus and my initial reaction is not to be sad about that, but to be glad that I’ve been proven right.  Just shows me that I’ve still got a long way to go.

As Christians, we need to leave behind the Us vs. Them mentality and adopt an Us for Them way of life.  It’s not about proving that we are right, it’s about showing Christ’s love to an unbelieving world.

Pop quiz is over.  I failed.  How’d you do?

I concur. The Us vs. Them mentality comes off like we’re against them. Coming from a very fundamental background, I see this in many people I’m around and even still in me sometimes. It is easy to place ourselves higher up on the spiritual totem pole and come off as condescending towards people who don’t believe. But if we (all christians, myself included) could realize that Love is really all these people need to find true happiness, I think we would see a radical movement of God.

An authentic and agenda-less love from us, and a genuine realization of the Love that Christ has for them are the two things that could change this world. Period. It is our job to be more effective at living and communicating this life-changing message.

We are supposed to be “in this world, not of it.” It wasn’t until after college when I realized how many Christians omit the “in” element of this verse in their lives. I was guilty of it for most of my teenage years. It’s frightening to see how much of a spiritual utopian bubble one can create by refusing to live and love amongst those who don’t know Him.

This, love with no condescension, and no conditions, is the ONLY way Hollywood can be reached. Not by public boycotts or obnoxious whistle-blowing. I have seen the results of the latter in people I have known, and it truly angers me to think of the countless souls that are lost to eternity through spiritual arrogance.

Great post, cous. Something everyone needs to hear.
