God’s Beautiful World
My mom used to always sing a song to us when we were kids and were out in nature. It went something like this:
God’s beautiful world
God’s beautiful world
I love God’s beautiful world
Hmm. There had to be more to it than that, but I can’t for the life of me remember. The point is that my mom was really good about helping us understand how nature glorifies God. I guess this has always stuck with me because I never feel closer to God than when I’m looking at his creation.
We’re in California on vacation for the next week. Today we drove from LA to San Diego and stopped in Laguna Beach. I felt really close to God there. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. This picture doesn’t adequately capture the majesty of the pacific ocean crashing against the rocks, but it does have three of the things I love the most in it. 1. My beautiful wife 2. My baby boy (just barely visible in a nice looking baby bump) 3. God’s beautiful world.
How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number-living things both large and small.
Psalm 104:24-25
What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

The rest of the song goes like this -
He made it for you (she’d poke us in the stomach)
He made it for me
I love God’s beautiful world.
The most beautiful place I’ve been has to be Arches National Park near Moab Utah. (where they filmed the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.) Breathtaking.
I’m reminded of a quote from the end of The Last Battle - the final Narnia book. (No spoilers here.) One character upon going to heaven says,
“I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is the land I have been looking for all my life, though never knew it till now. The reason why we loved Narnia is that it sometimes looked a little like this.”
I think that’s why we love nature so much. And why its so hard to leave breathtaking sights like that. Because we’re getting glimpses of Heaven.
